Kick back and settle in for a relaxing stay at House on a Hill overlooking Geneva Lake. Enjoy all the charm of a vintage home, built in 1905, during the era when families began to escape Chicago summers and headed to this pristine lake. Regular updates have focused on retaining the charm, while incorporating contemporary conveniences.
The 4000 sq. ft. house sits on two wooded acres with 120 feet of lakefront and offers a commanding view of the lake. The private pier has a covered mechanized boat lift and is complemented by a second smaller boat dock, a swim raft, and a buoy for an additional boat. It’s a seven-minute walk along the lake path to the village of Fontana, where you will find a variety of restaurants, small shops, boat rentals, and a public sand beach. You can rent a power boat and/or Jet Skis from Gordy's in Fontana. We also include a 2 person kayak with life vests.
The interior of the home has Midwest Prairie architecture with 12’ beamed ceilings on the first floor The Great Room features two sitting areas, a large fireplace, and a home theater with a 4K LED 55” TV. The adjoining dining room seats 12.
The favorite room in the in the summer is the spacious porch with comfortable furniture and a screened sitting and dining area. It’s a perfect spot for morning coffee while watching the lake come to life, reading books, cocktail hours, and mealtime gatherings.
The house has an open kitchen concept which includes a seating area with cozy chairs, dining table, TV, Franklin stove, and butler’s pantry/wet bar. The fully-equipped kitchen boasts a double oven, four-burner stove, microwave, a Keurig, and a regular coffeemaker, blender, double toaster, and a 28 side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. Dishware and glassware serves 15-20.
Adjoining the kitchen is a powder room and a laundry room with washer, dryer, and utility sink. An outdoor gas grill is available on the back patio.
The house has central air conditioning with an auxiliary unit in the kitchen. Internet access is available throughout the home.
The upstairs features another open sitting area with large screen cable TV, DVD, and VCR, a fireplace, and large desk. There are six bedrooms (all located upstairs) that sleep 13 in the summer, with three full bathrooms. (There are five bedrooms that sleep 11 in the winter, with 2 full bathrooms.)
Bedroom 1 has a King bed, is a corner room, overlooks the lake and has an attached dressing room and bathroom.
Bedroom 2 overlooks the lake with a queen bed, and uses the hall bathroom.
Bedroom 3 is a corner room, overlooks the lake with a queen bed and shares the attached bathroom with bedroom 4.
Bedroom 4 is corner room with two twin beds and shares the attached bathroom with bedroom 3.
Bedroom 5 is a smaller corner room with a double bed and shares the hall bathroom.
Bedroom 6 is a smaller room with a bunk bed and a twin that sleeps up to 3 and shares the hall bathroom.
Family holidays are memorable, especially Christmas and New Year’s, when the house is decorated for the season. The fireplace is a gathering spot for family and friends. There are many special holiday activities in the area, including a lake cruise with the Lake Geneva Cruise Line from Williams Bay along the lake shore and a Light festival at the Grand Geneva Resort. Winter also affords great sledding down our hill to the lake. Milwaukee theater beckons over the holidays, and it’s only a 45-minute drive from Fontana.
Summer activities range from golf at one of the many outstanding courses in the region to hiking, running, biking, swimming, boating, fishing, dining, antiquing, shopping, or even visiting the nearby spa at the Abbey Resort. Discover the local wineries or cheese factories or perennial farms, or farmer’s markets to immerse yourself in the local culture and just kick back !
